I'm a huge fan of extended DVDs, and of MLP. Since there's a new movie coming in 2017 (and not an Equestria Girls spinoff) I think it would be a financially smart choice for them to think about this.
The theatrical edition wouldn't have much that new-comers couldn't enjoy, but the extended version would be chock full of obscure references to past episodes, as well as contain material that fans would enjoy seeing (such as an explanation as to what happened to A.J's parents, and Pinkie throwing an anniversary or wedding party for Lyra and BonBon).
I realize not many animated movies get their own extended cuts (the special edition of Beauty and the Beast is one rare exception, and that was just a single scene), but with the huge adult following MLP has, I think they should think about it.

I agree with the wisdom that M.A. Larson keeps sharing: They will continue making the show for the intended target audience. If they started designing it for bronies, it would ruin that which people fell in love with in the first place.
I'm a bit worried that the strong pursuit of expansion of the franchise might harm it, too. I found that Rainbow Rocks lacked a bit of the magic of the first movie. If MLP is developing the way the Star Trek movies did (and I don't even include the Abrams crap), then MLP might lose its essence.
